What is ETIAS and When Does It Start? 2026 Europe Travel Guide

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), developed by the European Union to enhance border security, closely concerns travelers who are not subject to visa requirements or hold special passports, including Turkish citizens. With recent official announcements, the system's launch date has been postponed to the last quarter of 2026. So, what will this new system change in our lives?

What is ETIAS?

First of all, ETIAS is not a visa; it is a completely digital pre-authorization system. Everyone who has the right to enter the Schengen area without a visa, including holders of special (green) passports, will need to fill out an online form before traveling.

ETIAS Application Process and Fee

  • Application fee: 7 Euros

  • Approval time: Expected to be completed within minutes for 95% of applications

  • Validity period: 3 years depending on your passport validity

Why Was It Postponed to 2026?

The main reason why the system will start in 2026 instead of 2025 is the technical delays in the EES (Entry/Exit System) integration. Since ETIAS is designed to work together with EES, both systems need to be launched simultaneously.

What Should You Do?

When ETIAS comes into effect, it will be vital to follow the system and get your ETIAS approval before purchasing your flight ticket to avoid disrupting your travel plans.
